E.L. Hermann German Viola Bow, c.1970
This bow exhibits a softened octagonal Pernambuco stick. This stage of the making process, the transition from octagonal to round, is closely controlled by the maker to achieve the best ratio of flexibility to strength, its ability to respond quickly to the player’s needs … beautifully done!
Edwin Lothar Herrmann came from a long line of Vogtland bow makers, the family tradition stretching back to the early 18th century. He learned the craft from his father and grandfather, completing his Masters Examination in 1949. He worked in his father’s workshop until 1960 after which he set-up his own workshop in Markneukirchen.
